Like most people, I’ve made some dumb money moves. For example, I didn’t save a dime from my first job. Oops. I’ve since stopped slacking and now save a bit from every pay check. My habit of not saving, however, resulted in me doing one thing amazingly well – spend. And there’s one purchase in particular that was about 5 different kinds of stupid.
I bought an iPhone 3g.
I bought Apple’s shiny new device in February 2009. It was not a wise move. Mainly because:
- I wasn’t working at the time.
- I had actually quit my part-time job just a few days before!
- I only had a few months worth of payments in the bank
In my defense, I should say that I really wanted the iPhone. That makes it slightly less dumb, right? No? Alright I give up. It was incredibly dumb! I don’t know what I was thinking. I’m pretty sure that the very week I was done working was the same week I ordered my Jesus Phone. Spending fail.
To my credit, I did buy a refurbished unit – which only set me back $100 – instead of the regular $200. Unfortunately, that didn’t change the fact that I had to sign up for 2 years of $30 a month data plan payments. And I had to buy a case.
As you can guess, I got tired of paying that data fee after a few months and was fully planning on going back to a “dumb” phone once my contract was up. I hated having to make that decision, but I knew my savings account would thank me later.
Luckily, I never got to the point where I actually had to make that choice. I got another job in the summer of 2010 working on the Census. That job paid extremely well and I decided to upgrade when Apple released the iPhone 4. This time though, I actually made sure I could afford it!
Was was your dumbest purchase? Do you think you’ll ever make a dumber one?
