The “Stop Buying Stuff At Work” Challenge

by Ryan on November 15, 2010

Since I started my part-time job, located in a shopping mall, I’ve been spending way more money than I’d like. Almost every time I go on a break, I head to the vending machine for a Dr. Pepper (the best type of pop in existence) or out to the food court for a slice of pizza.

I come back to work with a full stomach, but an empty wallet. Not good. So, I’ve decided to challenge myself to not spend any money on snacks while I’m at work for then next month. This means:

  • No delicious Dr. Peppers from the vending machine
  • No amazing slices of New York style pizza
  • Definitely need to leave the debit card in my car!
  • This won’t be easy. I hate planning my “meals” out ahead of time. But I want to break my habit of spending 3 or 4 bucks every day I work. That’s half of what I make in an hour! I’ll need to start bringing some of my own food from home and leave my wallet in the car. There’s no way I’ll be walking out to the parking lot in the cold weather!

Do you spend too much money on food or similar “work expenses? Think you can handle a challenge like this?

I know exactly what you mean! :) Since I started my job I’ve realized that I now use far more money than I used to before I got the job. Because I BUY my breakfast on-the-go every morning, BUY my lunch at work, and BUY my snacks and coke during my break in the afternoon. It began getting expensive to go to work, lol :) But I think I’ve controlled it now, so it’s on a reasonable level. But I’d still like to make my spending habits at work better, and am continually trying to do so.

Hey, do you mind a link exchange, by the way?

I have a personal finance blog too and I was a student when I started the blog as well, but I just recently graduated this year and have begun in the work force.

Haha. I used to be like this, but now I try to bring a lunch and snacks in from home almost every day, and I can save some money like this over the long run, plus I eat a lot healthier, too.
